BTG; Quote Collection #1
THIS IS A COLLECTION OF QUOTES THAT I HAVE WRITTEN ALONG WITH OTHER WRITERS.
Love can never be destroyed… prophecies, opinions, and knowledge may fade, erode, and wither away, but something as complete as love can never be destroyed. Therefore faith, hope and love are eternal. And of these three things… the greatest of all is, love.
Love is preserving
Love is patient
Love is passionate
Love never envies
And love does not rejoice in injustice, But in truth.
Love surpasses all
And believes all
Love bears for all
Love hopes for all
Love endures for all
And because of all of this, love can never be destroyed.
Scripture 1 Corinthians 13:1-13adapted to a quotation and teaching.
“Christians often all walk their own paths, live their own lives. A journey without happy farewells only persecuted and beaten ones, a beginning with one end, glorified with Christ. It’s lonely walking to and fro preaching in of season and out of season, but with God who is the immaterial, immortal, everlasting Spirit, He is self-existent, self-conscience, and self-determined. He is a person, living, seeing, hearing, speaking, thinking, grieving, and feeling. He is immense and immanent in all of the universe, the Creator of it, the upholder, sustainer, and ruler of all things. He is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, and immutable.” – Matthew Verderose
“You can always die. It’s living that takes real courage.”
“Death no longer terrifies men. The smell of blood is as common as the smell of roses, so he creates slavery and savagery which surpasses the horrors of dying. These can only be fought with more bloodshed and the cycle never ends. My life is guided by the power of the Holy Spirit, but when all is said, a sword against flesh and blood is a tool for destruction not salvation. The only way I can retain my Eternity is to preach the Gospel.”

“I will not stand by and watch people suffer while I have the swords to stop it… the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. NOTES FROM THE IMATATION OF CHRIST BY THOMAS A KEMPES
This is the greatest wisdom — to seek the kingdom of heaven through contempt of the world.
Try, moreover, to turn your heart from the love of things visible and bring yourself to things invisible.
Indeed a humble rustic who serves God is better than a proud intellectual who neglects his soul to study the course of the stars. He who knows himself well becomes mean in his own eyes and is not happy when praised by men.
Many words do not satisfy the soul; but a good life eases the mind and a clean conscience inspires great trust in God.
Do not be proud, therefore, because of your learning or skill. Rather, fear because of the talent given you.
If you wish to learn and appreciate something worth while, then love to be unknown and considered as nothing. Truly to know and despise self is the best and most perfect counsel.
To think of oneself as nothing, and always to think well and highly of others is the best and most perfect wisdom.
Wherefore, if you see another sin openly or commit a serious crime, do not consider yourself better, for you do not know how long you can remain in good estate. All men are frail, but you must admit that none is more frail than yourself.
The more recollected a man is, and the more simple of heart he becomes, the easier he understands sublime things, for he receives the light of knowledge from above
The pure, simple, and steadfast spirit is not distracted by many labors, for he does them all for the honor of God. And since he enjoys interior peace he seeks no selfish end in anything.
This ought to be our purpose, then: to conquer self, to become stronger each day, to advance in virtue.
Humble knowledge of self is a surer path to God than the ardent pursuit of learning.
He is truly great who is little in his own eyes and makes nothing of the highest honor.
He is truly wise who looks upon all earthly things as folly that he may gain Christ.
He is truly great, who is great in the love of God.
The Holy Scriptures; and every part must be read in the spirit in which it was written.
A proud and avaricious man never rests, whereas he who is poor and humble of heart lives in a world of peace.
VAIN is the man who puts his trust in men, in created things.
Do not be ashamed to serve others for the love of Jesus Christ and to seem poor in this world. Do not be self-sufficient but place your trust in God. Do what lies in your power and God will aid your good will. Put no trust in your own learning nor in the cunning of any man, but rather in the grace of God Who helps the humble and humbles the proud.
Do not take pride in your talent or ability, lest you displease God to Whom belongs all the natural gifts that you have.
Do not think yourself better than others lest, perhaps, you be accounted worse before God Who knows what is in man. Do not take pride in your good deeds, for God’s judgments differ from those of men and what pleases them often displeases Him.
If there is good in you, see more good in others, so that you may remain humble.
Notes from the book “ the beauty of Christ through brokenness”
Our refusal to bend and brake and be humbled causes us to God’s enemy
The Greek word for “oppose” used in James 4:6 is antitassomai, a word denoting “rage in battle against”
“ANYONE WHO SERVES GOD WILL DISCOVER SOONER OR LATER THAT THE GREAT HINDRANCE HE HAS IN THE LORD’S WORK IS NOT OTHERS, BUT HIMSELF. HE WILL DISCOVER THAT HIS OUTWARD MAN(SOAL) IS NOT IN HARMONY WITH INWARD MAN (SPIRIT). BOTH TEND TO GO TOWARDS TWO OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS FROM EACH OTHER.
HE WILL ALSO SENSE THE INABILITY OF HIS OUTWARD MAN TO SUBMIT TO THE INWARD CONTROL…THUS HE IS RENDERED INCAPABLE OF OBEYING GOD’S HIGHEST COMMAND.” – WATCHMAN – NEE
“When a man admits he has been foolish; it is hope that he will someday stand upon the door steps of wisdom” – C.H. Spurgeon.

Some things we have to point at rather than define. But let me try. God’s glory is

the infinite moral excellence of his character. In either case it signifies a reality of
infinite greatness and worth.”—John Piper

Jesus Christ.”—Reformation Study Bible

God being Who and What He is, and we being who and what we are, the only thinkable relation between us is one of full lordship on His part and complete submission on ours. “This doctrine is the head and the cornerstone. It alone begets, nourishes, builds, preserves, and defends the church of God; and without it the church of God cannot exist for one hour. . . .Whoever departs from the article of justification does not know God and is an idolater…. If the article of justification is lost, all Christian doctrine is lost at the same time. . . . When the article of justification has fallen, everything has fallen…” – Luther
“Justification is the very hinge and pillar of Christianity. An error about justification is dangerous, like a defect in a foundation. Justification by Christ is a spring of the water of life. To have the poison of corrupt doctrine cast into this spring is damnable.” – Thomas Watson
To present Christ Jesus to sinful men in order that through the power of the Holy Spirit they may come to put their trust in God through Him – J.I. Packer
The Canons of the Council of Orange (529 AD)
CANON 21. Concerning nature and grace. As the Apostle most truly says to those who would be justified by the law and have fallen from grace, “If justification were through the law, then Christ died to no purpose” (Gal. 2:21), so it is most truly declared to those who imagine that grace, which faith in Christ advocates and lays hold of, is nature: “If justification were through nature, then Christ died to no purpose.” Now there was indeed the law, but it did not justify, and there was indeed nature, but it did not justify. Not in vain did Christ therefore die, so that the law might be fulfilled by him who said, “I have come not to abolish them <the law and prophets> but to fulfill them” (Matt. 5:17), and that the nature which had been destroyed by Adam might be restored by him who said that he had come “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10).
London Baptist confession of faith (1644)
That those which have union with Christ, are justified from all their sins, past, present, and to come, by the blood of Christ; which justification we conceive to be a gracious and free acquaintance of a guilty, sinful creature, from all sin by God, through the satisfaction that Christ hath made by his death; and this applied in the manifestation of it through faith.
All believers through the knowledge of that Justification of life given by the Father, and brought forth by the blood of Christ, have this as their great privilege of that the new Covenant, peace with God, and reconciliation, whereby they that were afar off, were brought nigh by that blood, and have (as the Scripture speaks) peace passing all understanding, yea, joy in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have received the Atonement.
The Westminster Confession (1646)

Those whom God effectually calls, He also freely justifies; not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ’s sake alone; nor by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them, they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God.
II. Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and His righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification: yet is it not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, but works by love.
III. Christ, by His obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real and full satisfaction to His Father’s justice in their behalf. Yet, in as much as He was given by the Father for them; and His obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead; and both, freely, not for any thing in them; their justification is only of free grace; that both the exact justice, and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.
IV. God did, from all eternity, decree to justify all the elect, and Christ did, in the fullness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification: nevertheless, they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit does, in due time, actually apply Christ unto them.
V. God does continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified; and although they can never fall from the state of justification, yet they may, by their sins, fall under God’s fatherly displeasure, and not have the light of His countenance restored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.

Article 9—Of the Justification of Man
We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deserving’s. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith, only, is a most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort.
Westminster Shorter Catechism: Question 33
Q: What is justification?
A: Justification is an act of God’s free grace, wherein he pardoned all our sins, and accepted us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.
“Justification has to do solely with the legal side of salvation. It is a judicial term, a word of the law courts. It is the sentence of a judge upon a person who has been brought before him for judgment. It is that gracious act of God as Judge, in the high court of Heaven, by which He pronounces an elect and believing sinner to be freed from the penalty of the law, and fully restored unto the Divine favor. It is the declaration of God that the party arraigned is fully conformed to the law; justice exonerates him because justice has been satisfied.
Thus, justification is that change of status whereby one, who being guilty before God, and therefore under the condemning sentence of His Law, and deserving of naught but an eternal banishment from His presence, is received into His favor and given a right unto all the blessings which Christ has, by His perfect satisfaction, purchased for His people” – A.W. Pink

“Justification; is the right standing of mankind in relationship to God due to the forgiveness of sin, which God offers solely through the vicarious death of Jesus Christ on the cross and is appropriated through faith.” – J. Olsen
The activity of the church in telling the gospel to sinners with the intent to bring them to a saving knowledge Christ – J.C. Macaula
Is to spread the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised from the dead according to the scriptures and that as reigning Lord, He now offers the forgiveness of sins and the liberating gift of the Holy Spirit to all who repent and believe. Our Christian presence in the world is indispensable to evangelism and so it is that kind of dialogue who purpose is to listen sensitively in order to understand.
But evangelism itself is the proclamation of the historical, biblical, Christ as Savior and Lord, with a view of persuading people to come to him personally and be reconciled to God. In issuing the gospel invitation we have no liberty to conceal the cost of discipleship.
Jesus still calls all who would follow Him to deny themselves, take up their cross, and identify them selves with this new community. The results of evangelism include obedience to Christ, incorporation into His church and responsible service to the world. – Lausanne (1974)
“I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to.” – C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity
